ISO 26262:2018 (Functional Safety)

Functional safety remains one of the key concerns when it comes to new automotive developments. As the automotive market rapidly evolves developers face an ever-increasing number of challenges in ensuring functional safety. ISO 26262 represents an international standard and point of reference that governs functional safety in automotive product development.

Complying with ISO 26262 ensures a high level of safety is built into each component from the beginning. Direction is provided for the entire safety lifecycle from risk management to product decommission.

Goals of ISO 26262:

  • Provide an automotive safety lifecycle (management, development, production, operation, service, and decommissioning)

  • Covers functional safety aspects of the entire development process (e.g., requirements, specification, implementation, verification)

  • Provide an automotive-specific risk-based approach for determining risk classes (Automotive Safety Integrity Levels)

  • Provide requirements for validation and confirmation measures to ensure a sufficient level of safety is achieved

ISO/SAE 21434 (Cyber Security)

Cybersecurity is a growing threat in the automotive industry due to the adoption of highly networked and semi-autonomous vehicles. With vehicles adopting WLAN, Bluetooth, LTE, and USB, vehicles have become increasingly vulnerable to hacking activities. ISO/SAE 21434 was introduced to address cybersecurity requirements in the development of automotive electrical and electronic components. The standard aims to ensure all OEMs and participants in the supply chain have structured processes in place securing systematic development of safe vehicles and maintaining security through product lifecycle.

ISO/SAE 21434 provides the necessary guidance for organisations to:

  • Define cybersecurity policies and processes

  • Analyse, identify, and manage cybersecurity risks

  • Champion a ‘security by design’ or cybersecurity culture within the organization
